PCB & PCBA DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING
PCB & PCBA DFM Guide
LZJPCB is a PCB and PCBA manufacturer providing DFM engineering support for PCB fabrication and assembly. Use this guide to identify design risks, prepare your manufacturing files and reduce costly revisions before production.
PCB Fabrication DFM Checklist
Check your PCB layout, materials and manufacturing specifications before releasing your design for fabrication.
Key PCB Manufacturing Checks
Your PCB design must match the required manufacturing process. Review critical dimensions, stackup and fabrication files early to reduce production delays.
Standard rigid-PCB trace-width/spacing guidance is 3/3 mil. A 2.5 mil trace or space requires advanced-process engineering evaluation.
Confirm material, copper and structure. These values are not blanket limits for every board.
Swipe the table to compare all three columns.
| DFM Check | What to Verify | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Gerber & Drill Files | Correct layers, drill data and file revisions | Prevents manufacturing errors |
| PCB Stackup | Layer structure, materials and board thickness | Maintains the required construction |
| Trace Width & Spacing | Minimum trace and clearance requirements | Reduces etching and short-circuit risks |
| Hole Size & Annular Ring | Drill sizes, pad dimensions and tolerances | Improves drilling and plating reliability |
| Solder Mask | Mask openings and minimum mask clearance | Prevents pad exposure and bridging risks |
| Copper Clearance | Copper distance from board edges and holes | Reduces manufacturing defects |
| Controlled Impedance | Impedance targets and reference stackup | Supports signal integrity |
| Board Outline | Dimensions, slots, cutouts and tolerances | Prevents mechanical fit problems |
| Panelization | Panel layout, tooling holes and fiducials | Improves manufacturing efficiency |
PCB Assembly DFM Checklist
Prepare your BOM, component placement and assembly drawings to prevent sourcing errors, incorrect placement and soldering defects.
Key PCB Assembly Checks
Your assembly files should match the PCB layout and component specifications before SMT or through-hole production begins.
Swipe the table to compare all three columns.
| DFM Check | What to Verify | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| BOM & Component MPN | Correct part numbers and quantities | Prevents incorrect component sourcing |
| Component Footprints | Package dimensions and pad compatibility | Reduces assembly and soldering defects |
| Component Polarity | Pin 1 and polarity markings | Prevents incorrect component orientation |
| Pick-and-Place Files | Coordinates, rotations and board sides | Ensures accurate SMT placement |
| Assembly Drawings | Component locations and special instructions | Prevents assembly misunderstandings |
| Component Spacing | Placement clearance and component heights | Supports assembly and rework access |
| Fiducials & Tooling | Alignment marks and board support | Improves SMT placement accuracy |
| Test Point Access | Electrical test points and connector access | Supports ICT and functional testing |
| Soldering Requirements | Thermal limits and soldering methods | Protects heat-sensitive components |
5 Common PCB & PCBA DFM Issues
Small design errors can lead to manufacturing delays, assembly defects and unexpected costs. Review these common problems before submitting your PCB files.
Mismatched PCB File Revisions
Different Gerber, drill or assembly file revisions can cause manufacturing errors.
Recommended Fix
Confirm that all manufacturing and assembly files use the same approved revision.
Insufficient Trace Width or Spacing
Traces and clearances outside the selected manufacturing process can cause fabrication defects.
Recommended Fix
Check trace width, spacing and copper requirements against the PCB manufacturing capabilities.
Incorrect Hole and Pad Dimensions
Mismatched drill sizes, annular rings or pad dimensions can reduce connection reliability.
Recommended Fix
Verify finished hole sizes, plating requirements and pad geometry before fabrication.
Component Footprint or Polarity Errors
Incorrect component footprints or polarity markings can cause placement and soldering defects.
Recommended Fix
Verify component packages, pin orientation and BOM data against the PCB layout.
Inaccessible PCB Test Points
Poor test point placement can limit ICT coverage and complicate production testing.
Recommended Fix
Provide accessible test points and confirm test fixture requirements during PCB design.
