PCBA Quality Assurance and Testing

Every turnkey PCB assembly order undergoes a nine-stage quality control process, achieving a 98% first-pass yield and a 99% on-time delivery rate.

9-Stage PCBA Quality Control

  1. Incoming material inspection (IQC): We verify components and detect counterfeits.
  2. Solder paste inspection (SPI): Every piece gets a 100% paste volume check.
  3. Post-SMT AOI: Our automated optical inspection covers 100% of the boards.
  4. X-ray inspection: We use X-rays for 100% inspection of BGA, QFN, and hidden joints.
  5. Post-reflow visual inspection: We follow IPC-A-610 Class 2 and Class 3 standards.
  6. Post-THT visual inspection: Solder joint integrity is what we’re looking for.
  7. In-circuit test (ICT): This step is optional, but it’s for electrical verification.
  8. Functional test (FCT): The customer provides the test plan for this one.
  9. Outgoing quality control (OQC): A final audit before we ship anything out.

Testing Methods We Offer

  • AOI, or automated optical inspection, is now a standard feature on all PCBs, no exceptions.
  • We use X-ray inspection on 100% of BGA and QFN packages.
  • ICT, or in-circuit testing, involves fixture-based electrical testing, which gives us a good idea of the board’s overall health.
  • FCT, functional circuit testing, relies on custom test programs that we create based on each customer’s specs.
  • Flying probe testing is great for prototypes because it doesn’t require a fixture, and it’s pretty versatile.
  • Burn-in testing is a 48 to 72 hour process that involves thermal cycling, which can be tough on the boards.
  • Boundary scan, also known as JTAG, is what we use for complex digital boards that are hard to access physically.

PCBA Rework and Repair Services

LZJPCB provides full rework capability for both LZJPCB-built and customer-supplied PCBAs:

  • We offer BGA rework with X-ray verification, which helps ensure the job’s done right.
  • Component replacement is available for a range of parts, including passive, active, and connector components.
  • And for reused BGA components, LZJPCB provides a reball service.
  • Track repair and wire-jumper correction are also part of their services.
  • Conformal coating rework is another option, so customers can get their PCBAs back in working order.

Certifications and Compliance

  • ISO 9001:2015 is about quality management
  • IATF 16949 is for the automotive industry, focusing on quality
  • ISO 13485 deals with medical device quality
  • And ISO 14001 is all about environmental management
  • We’re UL Recognized, which means we meet US and Canada safety standards
  • Our products are RoHS compliant, so they don’t have hazardous substances
  • We’re also REACH compliant, which is the EU’s chemical safety regulation
  • IPC-A-610 Class 2 and Class 3 are the standards we follow for assembly acceptability
  • IPC-J-STD-001 has the soldering requirements we need to meet

LZJPCB have these certifications and comply with regulations, it’s not just about checking boxes.

PCB Assembly Cost — What Determines Your PCBA Price?

PCB assembly cost at LZJPCB is calculated transparently based on seven factors. Understanding these factors helps you optimize your design for lower cost without sacrificing quality.

  1. PCB fabrication cost: This depends on layer count and board size. Materials like FR-4 or Rogers matter too, as does the surface finish, such as HASL or ENIG.
  2. Component BOM cost: This part is usually 60 to 80% of the total PCBA cost. But it really depends on the specific parts you choose and where you source them.
  3. Assembly complexity: SMT-only is the cheapest option, mixed SMT and THT costs more. BGA or fine-pitch work sits at the high end of the price scale.
  4. Volume and quantity: Your per-unit cost drops 40 to 60% when you go from 100 pieces to 10,000 pieces. Which is a massive jump.
  5. Testing requirements: AOI is normally included. But an ICT fixture (which runs $1,500 to $5,000 NRE) or extra FCT programming will add to the bill.
  6. Turnaround time: You can use the standard lead time as a baseline. Or you can pay a 30 to 50% premium for a 24-hour quick-turn.
  7. Special processes: This covers things like conformal coating, potting, underfill, and any custom packaging you might need.

How to Reduce PCBA Cost: 5 Engineer Tips

  1. Standardize components across projects to gain bulk discounts and reduce BOM cost
  2. Use SMT over THT where possible for faster assembly and lower labor cost
  3. Avoid 0.25 mm BGA if 0.4 mm BGA works to reduce rework risk and increase yield
  4. Panelize efficiently to fit more boards per panel and reduce fabrication cost
  5. Order in volume tiers of 100, 500, 1,000, or 5,000 pieces to optimize per-unit pricing

Frequently Asked Questions: Turnkey PCB Assembly

What is turnkey PCB assembly?

Turnkey PCB assembly is a one-stop service. It is also called full turnkey PCBA or turnkey EMS.

A single manufacturer handles PCB fabrication, component sourcing, SMT and through-hole assembly, testing, and optional box-build integration.

This eliminates the need to coordinate multiple vendors.

In turnkey PCB assembly, the manufacturer sources all components and manages the entire BOM.

In consigned assembly, the customer supplies all components, and the manufacturer only performs the assembly labor.

Turnkey is faster and typically has lower total cost. Consigned gives the customer more control over components.

LZJPCB has no MOQ for turnkey PCB assembly prototypes. We accept orders starting at 1 piece.

For production runs, the minimum volume is 50 pieces.

We serve hardware startups and Fortune 500 OEMs with the same quality standards.
