Material and technology answers

Frequently Asked Questions About Ceramic PCB

Short definitions that separate substrate chemistry, manufacturing technology and adjacent high-frequency laminates.

What Materials Are Used for Ceramic PCBs?

The core material routes are Alumina (Al₂O₃) and Aluminum Nitride (AlN). Alumina provides a balanced cost, insulation and thermal solution. AlN provides higher thermal performance for concentrated heat. The quotation names the exact grade, thickness and conductor system.

Alumina PCB vs Aluminum Nitride PCB: Which Should You Choose?

Choose Alumina when its heat-spreading performance meets the design and cost control is important. Choose AlN when the heat flux or module temperature requires a lower-resistance thermal path. Final selection also uses conductor attachment, mechanical mounting, thickness, availability and the specified verification method.

Alumina / Al₂O₃

Balanced insulation, mechanical stability, availability and cost.

Aluminum Nitride / AlN

Higher thermal performance for concentrated heat and compact power.

What Is the Difference Between HTCC and LTCC Ceramic PCB?

HTCC uses a higher-temperature ceramic firing system with compatible refractory conductors. LTCC uses a lower-temperature glass-ceramic tape system with a different conductor family and supports integrated multilayer features. Material tape, conductor, firing profile and feature set must be released as one compatible system. Compare ceramic technologies →

Is a Rogers PCB the Same as a Ceramic PCB?

No. Rogers products used for high-frequency PCBs are engineered laminate systems, including PTFE- or hydrocarbon-based materials that can contain ceramic filler. Alumina and AlN ceramic PCBs use a ceramic substrate body. They require different fabrication rules, thermal models and supply specifications. Review high-frequency PCB →
