RF selection questions

Frequently Asked Questions About RF & Microwave PCB

RF, microwave and high-frequency terms overlap, but procurement still needs a precise material, stackup, geometry and evidence scope. Open the relevant question to define the actual board.

What Is an RF PCB?

An RF PCB carries radio-frequency signals in structures whose laminate, dielectric thickness, copper geometry, reference planes, vias and launches affect impedance, loss and field behavior. It is not defined by a single frequency threshold; the operating band and electrical targets determine how tightly those variables must be controlled.
What is the difference between RF, microwave and high-frequency PCB?
RF and microwave describe application bands and electromagnetic behavior, while "high-frequency PCB" is a broader manufacturing / material category. This page owns RF / microwave circuit-board intent; generic high-frequency manufacturer and material education remain on the High-Frequency PCB page.
How should Dk and Df be specified?
Name the material code, data-sheet revision, test method and frequency alongside nominal / design Dk and Df assumptions. Values measured by different methods or at different frequencies are not automatically interchangeable in impedance or loss calculations.
Does ±5% controlled impedance apply to every RF stackup?
No universal promise is made from the headline alone. ±5% is a published target-control baseline; actual applicability depends on material, dielectric / copper tolerance, geometry, coupon structure, method and agreed acceptance plan.
Can LZJPCB provide S-parameter or RF performance testing?
Submit the required insertion loss, return loss or S-parameter condition so responsibility can be confirmed before quotation; do not assume bare-board electrical test is an RF performance test.
What affects an RF PCB quote?
Material and sourcing, layer / hybrid stackup, copper, critical geometry, impedance, via / back-drill needs, finish, dimensions, coupon / inspection, quantity, schedule, assembly and RF test scope all affect the quote.
