Aluminum PCB Materials & Thermal Performance

Choose aluminum core PCBs with thermal dielectrics, copper thicknesses, and substrate structures matched to your heat dissipation, electrical insulation, and mechanical requirements.

Thermal system

Aluminum PCB Stackup & Heat Transfer

Your aluminum PCB combines circuit copper, a thermally conductive dielectric, and an aluminum base. Selecting the right dielectric thickness, thermal conductivity, and copper layout helps transfer heat toward the heat sink while maintaining electrical insulation.

A useful material review keeps all three layers and the external interface in one calculation, not separate material comparisons.

  • Circuit Copper — 0.5–4 oz copper for routing and current requirements.
  • Thermal Dielectric — Material conductivity and insulation thickness matched to your thermal and electrical needs.
  • Aluminum Core — Metal substrate for heat spreading and mechanical support.
  • Thermal Interface — Flatness and contact area matched to your heat sink or enclosure.
Dimensional stack

Aluminum Core Thickness & Mechanical Fit

Get aluminum PCBs with finished thicknesses and mounting features matched to your product enclosure and thermal interface. LZJPCB supports 0.8–3.2 mm finished aluminum PCB thicknesses with custom drilling, routing, and dimensional control.

Finished board thickness is the sum of the metal core, thermal dielectric, copper, and finished coating — each element is listed separately in the quotation.

  • Finished Board Thickness — 0.8–3.2 mm.
  • Aluminum Core Thickness — Selected according to mechanical and thermal requirements.
  • Custom Machining — Mounting holes, board outlines, and cutouts.
  • Dimensional Control — Board flatness, hole positions, and mounting tolerances.
Construction choice

Single-Sided & Double-Sided Aluminum PCB

Choose single-sided or double-sided aluminum PCBs based on your circuit routing, thermal management, and electrical insulation requirements.

Single-Sided Aluminum PCB

Manufacture single-sided aluminum PCBs for LED lighting, power modules, and applications requiring efficient heat dissipation. A thermally conductive dielectric separates the copper circuit from the aluminum base.

Its direct copper–dielectric–aluminum construction is easier to review, but the dielectric and mounting interface still determine whether heat leaves the board as intended.

  • 0.8–3.2 mm Board Thickness
  • 0.5–4 oz Copper Weight
  • 3/3 mil Minimum Trace / Space

Double-Sided Aluminum PCB

Get double-sided aluminum PCBs with copper circuits on both sides for more complex routing and component placement. Insulated through-holes and controlled metal-core clearances provide electrical interconnections while maintaining isolation from the aluminum base.

The final build must define how layers connect, where electrical isolation is maintained, and how the metal core affects drilling, plating, and thermal transfer.

Selection questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Aluminum PCB

A metal base should solve a defined thermal and mechanical constraint, not replace material review.

Aluminum PCB vs Copper Core PCB

Choose aluminum when weight, availability, cost and the required thermal route fit an aluminum-base material system. Consider copper core when the project needs a different heat-spreading, mechanical or power-density balance. Do not select from a universal conductivity number; compare the actual dielectric, base thickness, geometry and interface for both constructions.

Decision
Aluminum PCB
Copper Core PCB
Base material
Aluminum metal base
Copper metal base / core
Weight & handling
Generally lighter for a comparable metal volume
Generally heavier; mechanical route must be reviewed
Thermal decision
Depends on dielectric, geometry and interface
Depends on copper-core construction and interface
Commercial choice
Common option for many LED / power builds
Selected when its project-specific performance justifies the route
Review Copper Core PCB

Is Aluminum Nitride PCB the Same as Aluminum PCB?

No. Aluminum nitride (AlN) is a ceramic substrate material, while an aluminum PCB means a metal-base construction using an aluminum base with an electrically insulating dielectric and copper circuit. Route AlN material selection to the Ceramic PCB page so the correct substrate process and design rules are reviewed.

Review Ceramic PCB
What are the advantages and disadvantages of aluminum PCB?
Its main advantage is a defined route from copper through an insulating dielectric into a metal base that can couple to a housing or heat sink. Tradeoffs include material-specific dielectric limits, constrained multilayer options, mechanical / hole rules and the need to design the mounting interface as part of the thermal system.
How is aluminum PCB thermal conductivity specified?
Separate the conductivity and thickness of the dielectric from the aluminum base data and from the thermal resistance of the complete board / interface. Send the heat source, contact area, allowable temperature rise and enclosure path so engineering can review a project-specific material route.
Can you prototype a 2-layer aluminum PCB?
A 2-layer prototype is reviewed from the actual cross-section, interconnect, holes, insulation, finish and material availability. Submit the files so the supported construction and prototype schedule can be confirmed.
What affects aluminum PCB cost?
Cost changes with layer structure, aluminum and dielectric route, copper, size / shape, drilling, finish, testing, quantity, schedule and assembly scope. Quote the released construction rather than comparing suppliers from a layer count or a "cheap" headline price.
