Frequently Asked Questions About HDI PCB
Short definitions for structure selection without turning the commercial page into a general encyclopedia.
What Is an HDI PCB?
HDI means High-Density Interconnect. An HDI PCB uses laser microvias, fine routing and controlled buildup layers to place more interconnects in less board area than a conventional through-hole board. The fabrication package must identify its microvia layer pairs, stackup and sequential-lamination route.
How Is HDI PCB Different from a Conventional Multilayer PCB?
A conventional multilayer PCB relies primarily on mechanically drilled through holes. An HDI multilayer PCB adds laser microvias, buildup dielectrics and sequential lamination to increase routing density and support finer-pitch packages. HDI inspection focus also includes microvia targets, fill, registration, X-ray or microsection.

When Should You Use Any-Layer HDI PCB?
Use any-layer HDI when BGA escape and interconnect density cannot be completed with a lower-complexity buildup. Any-layer capability allows microvia routing across multiple buildup layers, but it also adds lamination, alignment, laser and inspection work. Choose it only when the routing and package architecture need that freedom.
